Year’s Greatest Week (for heroic caregivers of little kids)

Tomorrow marks the start of the year’s most anticipated week for caregivers of little kids. Why? Well, with the holidays, most of the many, many great activities around town have been on break, and with the weather being so cold, many of the caregivers for our very “energetic” small kids have been stuck inside. Well, not anymore starting Monday!! Rejoice!!

Monday the Parks & Rec’s Gym Buddies starts it’s run as an alternative to too cold playgrounds (the mall playground, and the Flint Hills Discovery Center upstairs play area are very nice, but it’s about time for some variety!). And all the various ‘story time’ programing at the library gets back going all this week (including some extra MLK Jr. related events).

So, rejoice caregivers of small children! The post-holidays doldrums are over, and then you can get back to counting down the months until they start school full-time! Just kidding–we all love our kids and cherish e-v-e-r-y minute with them.

Bike Walk MHK

Bike Walk MHK’s monthly Critical Mass Ride is one of Manhattan’s most fun regularly occurring events—the next is next Friday, 25 Jan at 6:30.  Bike Walk MHK aims to make biking and walking around Manhattan a fun and practical option for EVERYONE.  This is not an advocacy group primarily for “cycling enthusiasts” (though they are more than welcomed too) it’s one that knows how life-affirming moving oneself around town using ones own power can be, and would like to maximize the opportunities for EVERYONE to do that.

Bike Walk MHK educates, celebrates, and advocates for safe cycling and walking in Manhattan, Kansas and the surrounding Flint Hills region.

If you’d like to get to know some of these fun and civically-minded people, make it out to the next Critical Mass Ride.  If you’d like to make their mission, your mission too, like them on Facebook @BikeWalkMHK and follow them on Twitter @bikewalkmhk—too easy!

Abraham Lincoln presents “A New Birth of Freedom”

The drama and momentousness of President Lincoln’s life and the Civil War is often lost in our school-aged rush-through of jamming dates, events, and leaders into our brains, but this time period richly rewards anyone who studies it. Awe, gratitude, disgust and much more are all feelings a modern American might takeaway from the learning of lives during this time. Learn the character it takes to live heroically through the worst times, the pitfalls of civic estrangement, and–by comparison–the unprecedented opportunities we have today, as we stand on the shoulders of Lincoln and other virtuous contemporaries of his.

Most Joyful Place on Earth

I’m pretty sure between 11 and 11:45 AM today, the most joyful place on Earth will be the Tami Borck Storytime Room at the library. That is the place and time for our library’s free Toddler & Preschooler Dance Party. Not sure if it’ll be the bouncing kids or proud parents that’ll have bigger smiles!

Also this morning, HyVee host its free ‘Healthy You Year‘ event. See the event page for all the perks of attending, but HyVee has coordinated to have some of MHK’s top wellness gurus there to help you meet your 2019 goals. Including:

The Little Apple Pilates Co.
9Round – Manhattan, KS
Premier Chiropractic & Wellness
Manhattan Fit Body Boot Camp
Evolution Training Center
Mathis Physical Therapy & Hand Center
– Monica’s Vegan and Vegetarian Cuisine (NEW area food truck)
KANbucha (kombucha drinks)
Life Equals – Balance the Superfood Shot
– Magnacalm Lotion
